What can you do to develop resilience

I am inspired to write today about resilience, because I am hearing so much about resilience training these days, in the context of Corporate HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) and I wonder if we are talking about the same thing.

For me being resilient is the capacity to come back to my center after I had an upset: unexpected bad news, a disappointment, a frustration or something that angered me.

As a person in business (and most of us are in business in one way or another), I take action and I wish and expect outcomes that in many cases don't materialise.

Then I worry, or get upset or angry or the 3 things at the same time.

Throw in the mix any unexpected upset in my personal life or in my finances and we have a bomb that can explode and leave me hurting for some time.

The question is, how long?

Because upset I will be at some point of the week, but would it last a month, few days, hours or minutes? Can I come back to an empowering state pretty quickly, or at least to a balanced stated?

I have been learning techniques to do this all my life. This is pretty much normal to me, to be resilient and I learnt pretty quickly to manage my emotions when I was a child.

I have a sensitive nature: my feelings get hurt easily, and I happen to have a father whose preference was to vent any upset shouting from the top of his lungs to my mother, me and my brother and sisters, saying anything that he pretty much felt like it. It could be something pretty damaging to my self-esteem and that would be fine in his world. My self-esteem got damaged, that is for sure, and the beauty of this story is that it has a happy ending. Since I was 14 I started to read literature that supported my self-confidence. I did things with the objective of making me more confident, like studying petroleum engineering and work in a male dominated industry like oil and gas. The irony of this is that these days I am an expert in Soft Skills for the...Read More

What is R.O.M. Meditation (Results Oriented Meditation)?

Results Oriented Meditation (R.O.M.), is there such a thing? And how to get started?

I am going to explain you in few paragraphs what is this ROM Meditation that I have created and how it helps me to achieve goals that I have in mind. I am going to give you the blueprint. You don't need to pay anything. You don't need to contract me to help you or your team. You can start immediately.
What I do is to set a "cycle" of 7 days meditations about a topic that I want to change or achieve results with. By committing to only 7 days, I know I can be disciplined enough to meditate for 7 days straight in one topic. Then I see results, get encouraged and continue for another 7 days.

I follow the guidelines from Joe Dispenza. I picked up bits and pieces from his book "Supernatural".

First of all I choose one letter that symbolises what I am trying to achieve, for example Work. I draw a big W with some flowers and waves and radiating energy. Then, in the left, I make a list of points I want to achieve regarding Work, for example: "Do Work that I feel passionate about, attract amazing clients, be hadsomely compensated ,etc.". Those are my "intentions". An Intention is a bit different than a goal because it doesn't have a specific timeline for taking specific actions. It is more a desire and I plant in my subconscious mind the firm intention to realise it. Then, right of my letter, I write a list of "Elevated Emotions".Those are emotions that I anticipate feeling when my intention is realised, for example: "gratitude, enthusiasm, peace of mind, feeling energised, humbled, etc."

Why to focus on Elevated Emotions?

You can see this from many points of...Read More

How you can use Meditation to improve your business

Meditation is now mainstream. The guys that created the meditation App Headspace know that very well as are now producing sales of more than 100 MM $ per year with this App that helps people meditate. Who would have thought that was possible few years ago? Whole companies buy corporate licenses of Headspace for their employees or offer paid classes at lunch time or after work.

People swear by meditation and credit it with changing their life, making them feel healthier, more rested, more relaxed and even more successful. Then, why can't you start a meditation practice? I will explain you why and will connect the practice of meditation with increased success in your business.

The reason that you can't make meditation work for you is because anything that comes from the East, we in the West strip away from its spirituality context. We want the bullet points: the 3 steps to business profitability using meditation, for example. That doesn't work because it spoils what meditation really is.

That is why I am going to introduce you to the spiritual context of meditation, but in a way that you can understand with your Western mind.

But my explanation is going to have plenty of spirituality. I am warning you that I am not holding back..;)

If you want meditation really working for you and enhancing your quality of life, your relationships, health and business, I think that the spiritual context needs to be there.

There I go..

You are an spiritual Being in a physical body. You are an Infinite Being. You were a Being for an eternity before you entered in a physical body and will continue Being after you die.

You are the Being.

In Spanish it might make me more sense when we say: Eres el SER.

This Infinite Being is a creator and has a lot to give (obviously, because is infinite). It has an infinite amount of ideas, insights and peace.

It has the whole picture: past, present and the ability to see the...Read More

The power of a single word: Recommit

Recommit: I love this world. I discovered it when I attended my Passion Test Certification Course in Florida in 2012. We would fall behind schedule during the training because every time we were coming back later and later from the ten minutes breaks. The teacher proposed that we recommit to being on time after the breaks. No shaming, no recrimination: just recommit. And we did.
Since then, I have used that word for everything, personal and business.

For example, have you gone off track with your eating or exercise plan (or both)?

You can recommit. You can start again without shaming or self-judgement.

Start again committing to your health, your fitness, feeling good and looking good.

In business, the same applies.

Have you gone off track as a sales person and have had few bad weeks in terms of phone calls to prospects? Have you not attended your follow-up calls as you should? Have you not put the energy that you know you have in your sales meetings? This single word, recommit, can work wonders for your sales results.

Recommit. Recommit. Recommit.

Remember why you are doing what you do in the first place. If you don't have a strong reason: find it! You need a strong why and chances are that the best reasons are at the top of the 6 human needs piramid (growth and contribution) rather at the bottom (safety, variety, love/connection and significance).

Don't you know the 6 human needs model? Tony Robbins explains it in this popular Ted Talk.
That is a mindset of purpose and it will help you to be energised and passionate about what you do again.
Growth is a strong motivator, as we are driven to become the best version of ourselves.

Contribution is what moves us when we derive joy from being of service to others.

These two drivers will help you recommit. You will start calling, meeting, Zooming or Skyping again with renewed energy. That, of course, will have...Read More

How to use the Sales Turnaround process

It has happened to all of us: we have had a business upset. Business could become very frustrating because we are all the time trying to produce an outcome that does not depend entirely on us. Specially in sales, we are attempting to produce a result that depends on one or more people making decisions that mean a lot to them as well as being critical to us.

We use all the business tools at our disposal: we articulate clearly our business proposition, spend time and money in Marketing, see people in person, create rapport, prove value, understand customer's needs, and many more things. Even with all this and more, sometimes the outcome is not what we expect.

What to do them?

1-You could do what I have seen many years in my 25 years sales experience: get obsessed.

I have seen it and I have done it: come back again and again to a prospect that have said no, offer discounts, repeat or expand the value proposition, in summary, try to force an outcome.

Thousands of hours are spent every year in corporate offices talking about opportunities that are already dead and are not coming back to life. In fact, they never had life, even if they were one year in the CRM. There simply was no real prospect engagement and the business person failed to recognise that.

2-The second possibility is what I learned from my mentor @JanStringer from perfectcustomers.com and I have adapted for the corporate life. That is to use the Sales Turnaround process.

The Sales Turnaround process is a mix of logic and intuition but never fails to bring my clients and me back to our center and allows us to keep reaching out to our prospects.

When I have had a business upset, if I didn't have the Sales Turnaround process, given my achiever personality, I would enter in a loop of going at it again and again, trying to achieve the outcome that I seek. It has happened to me and I have seen many business people in the same situation, unable to give...Read More

The dangers of anger in business

It had been a terrible morning. I had been angry, very angry. I had not been this angry in a while. Of course I had not gotten almost anything done. My to do list had gone down the window.

It had consumed me, having spent few hours sending messages to my sisters and my best friend about the reason of my anger, specifically who was responsible for my anger and why.

I entered in a loop and couldn't get out of it.

I was being conscious that this anger was not productive but was stuck on it.

I decided to relax a bit and asked my brain to bring me some of my "spiritual solutions" to get out of this emotional mess.

Deepak Chopra has a book called "Spiritual Solutions: Answers to Life's Greatest Challenges", and even when I have not read the book, I have studied spiritual solutions for a while and have applied them to many of my personal and business challenges.

So I knew that the solution will show up in my brain and it would be a huge awakening or "aha moment" as I call it. The bigger the conundrum, the bigger the "aha moment".

So finally I remembered (I knew already, but had forgotten it temporarily) that my anger was due to me being upset with me. Some spiritual masters say: "the other doesn't exist". I don't know if the other does exist or not but it is vey useful to think like that. You realise that the whole drama that you have created is you being upset with you.

The beauty of this is that forgiving yourself and making a new commitment is totally doable. Changing someone else is not.

So then I remembered the conversation with the person that had upset me. During that conversation he said things that I didn't agree with....Read More

Get an Engaged Customer-6 Parts Challenge: Part -Get honest

This is a challenge in 6 parts that will lead you to acquire a new customer, one that is really “engaged” with you and your company.

If you accept this challenge, and take only 15 minutes for everyone of the 6 articles that I will write, the promise is that at the end of this process, you will engage with a customer that will be “perfectly fitted” for you and your business.

I didn't use to think in terms of “engaged customers”. For many years, my theme in sales was “to make it happen”. I pushed and pushed and my employers praised me and said that I was “very proactive”.

But sales were tough to come and the opportunities that required my push costed me up to the last drop of my energy.

Until I had no more energy. Or interest. I lost my mojo.

Luckily, I found around this time the book “Attracting perfect customers” by Jan Brogniez and Stacey Hall.

When I opened that book, a new world of effortless sales and perfect customers appeared in front of my eyes.

I didn't know then (it was still 2010) that very soon I would need every tip of that book, because in 2012 I was going to start my own Coaching and Consulting Business.

And that in 2014 I would become a Certified Facilitator of the Strategic Attraction Plan method, from Jan Brogniez (now Jan Stringer) and her husband Alan Hickman.

The system made so much sense that I decided to use it for me and my customers. And it worked. I started to experience an alignment with my new customers like never before. Things were in flow, much more effortless and therefore less cost of sales was involved.

I had seen so much struggle in my time with corporate sales, especially in the oil and gas sector complex technology sales, that I was (and I am) driven to make things better by bringing this new method to my former playground.

So that is the WHY of this challenge.

Now back to you and your sales situation.

Are you ready for applying a new perspective...Read More

How Perfectionism is killing your business

"I should have done better”- it would seem that reviewing our actions and learning from what didn’t work out is a good thing to do.
Having an attitude of learning constantly from the feedback that we receive in business seem to most of us, a healthy trait to have.
When does this attitude become a block to our success?
When we can not appreciate ourselves for who we are in the present moment, and constantly criticise our actions, this has a devastating effect in the way that we take action particularly.
We must remember that the primary function of our subconscious mind is to keep our safety so we can survive.
If when we reach out to the market, and venture “out there” with our products and services, we receive ruthless criticism from ourselves, the natural reaction of our subconscious mind would be to protect us from such predator: we are our worst enemy.
How would that manifest? It is subtle, and some times we don’t make the connection. It manifests when we have people to call, blog posts to write, actions to take, people to partner with, and we don’t take action.
We procrastinate, come up with excuses, and do other things before we do the ones we know are the game changer.
Will power does not work here. You simply can not fight with your subconscious perceived attempt to keep you safe from harm. You will lose.
The only thing that would help is catch yourself in that ruthless criticism, and remembering that being kind to yourself is not the same that being someone unable to learn from mistakes.
We still can learn but remembering that our worth is a given, and can not be questioned every step of the way.
We can take some time everyday to remember all the great things that we do for others: our family, our loved ones, and for our clients, with the dedication and passion that we...Read More
